The United States will choose its next president on November 5. Most likely, the top candidates will be the same as in 2020. There is no strong candidate for the Democratic nomination besides Joe Biden, currently president. Donald Trump, the president before him, has almost won the Republican primary. It has been nearly 70 years since there was a second election. After Mr. Trump lost the last election, his followers tried to change the outcome.
He is being charged with three other crimes and federal charges for his alleged role in that plan. During Mr. Biden’s presidency, there was a lot of trouble in Ukraine, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, as well as high inflation and big bills for economic policy. Both of the men are not liked. Many Americans will vote for the candidate they think is the least bad so that the election won’t be so much a popularity race as a vote on that.
The Candidates
Joe Biden (Current President)
At 81, Joe Biden will be history’s oldest major-party presidential candidate. He will beat his 2020 record. Mr. Biden ran for and won a Senate seat at 30 and served for almost 30 years. He lost the 1988 and 2008 presidential elections and was Barack Obama’s vice president.
He is known as a moderate Democrat but has pushed for unions and to make the state bigger while in office. He also led a group of countries to help Ukraine fight against Russia’s attack. Many people believe the job may end him, even though he says he will “finish the job” if re-elected.
Donald Trump (Former president)
Donald Trump’s campaign is very different from his equally different time as the 45th president of the United States. His previous tenure ended soon after his supporters attacked the Capitol with weapons. Three criminal charges were brought against him in federal court and one in Georgia state court. The charges were for allegedly planning the attack and a larger plot to change the results of the 2020 election. He is facing two more charges for a total of 91 felonies. The 77-year-old denies misconduct. Before appearing on reality TV, Trump, a self-proclaimed billionaire, gained and lost money in real estate.
This time, his campaign includes well-known culture-war issues (like building a wall along the border and calling it “left-wing gender insanity”). His campaign also includes new complaints (like against the lawyers trying his cases and the judges watching over them).
Current Poll Status of Presidential Elections
Will Trump win in 2024? For this, various surveys have been conducted. A new Wall Street Journal study comparing Donald Trump and Joe Biden shows they differ. The results are off by up to 2.5 percentage points. People were asked to choose between Trump and Biden as the most likely choice for president in 2024. Most said they would vote for Trump (47%), while only 45% said they would vote for Biden. In December, Trump was four points ahead.
The study also indicates possible answers to one of the most important questions in the 2024 election: will a better economy help Vice President Biden’s re-election chances against former President Donald Trump? As of now, it looks like it’s only slightly helping Biden. However, more voters are now focused on immigration, which is a dangerous problem for the president.
About 73% of people in the new Donald Trump polls, like the August Journal poll, say Biden is too old to run for re-election at age 81. However, 52% of people think that Trump, who is 77 years old, is too old to run for president. This is 5 points more than in August.
