Misinformation Spreads on X about Gmail
A message that looks like it’s from Google saying that Gmail will close on August 1 has spread widely. X (previously known as Twitter) shared that email. It has the headline “Google is sunsetting Gmail.” Moreover, it appears that Gmail users receive it. It informs all 2 billion account holders that Gmail will stop on August 1. The message said that, after this date, users would not be able to send, receive, or store emails using Gmail. However, it’s important to note that the rumor regarding the closure of Gmail is not completely true.
Backlash over Google’s AI Image Tool:
A screenshot of an email from Google was circulating online. This screenshot claimed that Gmail would shut down on August 1st of this year. The screenshot showed that after August, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving or storing emails. Many social media users shared this screenshot on social media platforms. This screenshot also suggested that it was a reaction to Google’s AI image tool, Gemini. The tool recently caused controversy when it produced images of racially diverse Nazi soldiers.
Clarification from Google:
However, Google has again assured the users that Gmail is not shutting down. Moreover, it will continue to be available in the future. The company confirmed this in a post on X. Google made it clear on social media: “Gmail is here to stay.” However, a feature of Gmail has indeed been discontinued. Tech experts also spoke up online to stop the rumors. They explained that Google wasn’t shutting down all of Gmail. But shutting the simpler version called HTML.
Last year, this change was confirmed in September. Marsha Collier, a tech teacher, said, “They stopped the basic version of Gmail in January 2024. The regular Gmail still works perfectly. It was just a silly rumor.”
Discontinued HTML-Only Version of Gmail
Tech experts explained that Gmail stopped offering its HTML-only version in January 2024. This version was useful for accessing emails in areas with low network connections. However, the regular @gmail service will keep running as usual.
