In 2024, Nova Scotia in Canada will welcome 12,900 students from other countries to study there. This is a special chance for these students to learn and grow in Nova Scotia’s colleges and schools. Last year, they gave more permits, but the number is a bit lower this year. Still, lots of students from around the world think Nova Scotia is a great place to study. This effort is part of a big plan to make sure Canada can continue to welcome students from other countries while keeping everything organized and fair.
Nova Scotia Hosts 16,000 International Students
The number of people living in Nova Scotia is decreasing, but it is still a popular place for international students to attend college. As of October 2023, full-time international students comprised about 16,000 of the province’s post-secondary students.
Thirty-two designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Nova Scotia can give out study permits. After high school, the only schools in the province that can take international students are DLIs. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), on the other hand, says Atlantic Canada has 41 DLIs.
Allocation of Nova Scotia Study Permits
This is how the permits are given out:
- 11,565 to Nova Scotia Community College and the ten universities in the province.
- 710–12 private career colleges are available.
- 526 language schools to nineteen.
On January 22, the federal government limited the number of study permits that could be given out. IRCC has taken many steps to stabilise the system and keep the number of international students in the country stable. Canada will give out 360,000 study permits to students from other countries in 2024. This is 35% less than the year before.
States and provinces can only give several Provincial Attestation Letters (PALs). It is up to the provinces to decide how to give them to people who want to study at a DLI and have a letter in their hand.
Recapping Provincial Allocations And PAL Status
All of Canada’s provinces have sent out their 2024 study permit applications, though they are all different in how they are filled out and what they ask for. Aside from that, they are also sending out provincial attestation letters (PALs). Students in all provinces affected by the cap can now get their study permits again.
The IRCC said it would send around 606,000 application applications for study permits to all provinces and territories. Starting in 2024, the goal is to give about 360,000 new study permits to new students who are not in K–12 or master’s or doctoral programs.

- Ontario: 235,000
- Nova Scotia: 12,900
- British Columbia: 83,000
- Alberta: 41,000
- New Brunswick: 9,400*
- Prince Edward Island: 3,300*
Post-Graduation Work Permit
IRCC, Canada’s immigration office, says that international students who start this kind of program after May 15, 2024, cannot get a work permit after they finish. Because the date was pushed back, IRCC has made it impossible for institutions based on the PCPP to hire anyone else before their students can’t longer be accepted into the PGWP. However, IRCC also says that some school graduates who go to schools that use the PCPP model can get a different kind of work permit.
